TiVo and Best Buy alliance to yield co-branded DVR

It’s all pending an official announcement later this morning but both the New York Times and San Jose Mercury News are reporting that Best Buy and TiVo are forming a “broad partnership.” Under the multi-year alliance, Best Buy will “heavily” promote TiVo products at its 1,100 stores across the US. TiVo, for its part, will develop a special flavor of its set-top box that will be sold in Best Buy stores and lets the retailer advertise its products and services directly to TiVo subscribers — items can then be purchased via the TiVo remote. The alliance goes even deeper as it will see TiVo’s software and search tools added to Best Buy’s own-branded consumer electronics (like Insignia and Dynex HDTVs) and Best Buy’s Napster music service will become available to TiVo subscribers on their TVs. While this all sounds like a win-win for the two corporations, TiVo CEO Tom Rogers says that the Best Buy-customized TiVo with Napster won’t likely arrive until “early next year” while the inclusion of TiVo’s interface on Best Buy’s Insignia or Dynex TVs is even “further out.” Until then the benefits for us, the consumers, are less clear.

Verizon-branded Samsung Glyde 2 becomes star in Blurrycam photoshoot

Samsung’s launch of the Glyde was, well, far less than stellar — but hey, second time’s a charm, right? Shots have surfaced from HowardForums of what’s apparently the Glyde 2 / u960. Looks like we’ve got a more expansive keyboard that makes better use of space on the bottom slide out, some TouchWiz action on the screen, and unsurprisingly a nice, big Verizon logo just above the screen. Nope, we don’t have a release date or official confirmation of any sorts, so for now just hang tight on the farthest edge of your seat and feel free to browse the other shots of the device in the gallery below.

Sony May Finally be Revving up a PlayStation Phone

he Sony rumor that just won’t die has reared its potentially beautiful head again: a PSP phone may be in the works. The latest back room rumblings come courtesy of Japan’s Nikkei Business Daily, which says Sony is about to open up a new department that will explore a “cell phone-game gear hybrid,” according to Reuters. Sony’s secret department could begin work as early as July, and so far the PlayStation maker is declining to comment on the rumors.

The obvious target of Sony’s rumored plan is Apple’s iPhone. Since the introduction of the iPhone 3G, gaming has been front and center in Apple’s iPhone-iTunes App Store ecosystem.
